Grilled Green Apple and Gruyere Sandwich
Ingredients
- 8 slices Roman Meal Twelve Grain Bread
- 8 teaspoons unsalted butter, softened
- 2 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored and thinly sliced
- 1 1/2 cups grated Gruyere cheese
- 4 tablespoons honey
- Salt and pepper to taste
Directions (serves 4)
- Preheat a heavy large skillet over medium heat.
- Spread one side of each slice of bread with 1 teaspoon of butter. Place four slices of bread, buttered sides down, on the preheated skillet.
- Layer the apple slices evenly over the bread. Sprinkle the apples evenly with the Gruyere and season with salt and pepper.
- Drizzle one tablespoon of honey over each layer of Gruyere. Top each sandwich with a remaining slice of bread, buttered side up, pressing lightly to adhere.
- Cook the sandwiches for 3-4 minutes, or until the bottom slices of bread are golden brown. Carefully flip each sandwich using a large metal spatula and continue to cook until the cheese has melted and the bottom sides are golden brown, 2-3 minutes longer.
- Transfer the sandwiches to a work surface and cut in half. Serve immediately to your very lucky guests!
